Practical Tips

Communication Wallets aim to support young people communicate their needs to others, independently.

Young people who don't use communication boards or aids in school may still benefit from using a communication wallet outside of school.

Communication wallets can act as a back up if someone finds it difficult to understand you, you may also use it to ask a question if you are not sure about something.

Having an additional means of communication often takes the strain out of visiting new places and new routines can be shown using pictures or symbols.

There are many types of credit card wallets, we found the ones with no fastening the easiest to use. You may be able to get a local bank or building society to donate some.

Young people used the wallets to:
- remember what they wanted
- order for themselves
- feel happy about what they had to do
- talk to someone else about the trip
